Description
A single rokad is where the day goes down in writing: every sale, every payment, every udhar given to a regular customer, written in the order it happened. Nothing is grouped and nothing is left for the evening, which is what makes the book worth keeping — at closing time the day’s position is on the page instead of in the shopkeeper’s head.
This one is 8 bhan on an 8.5 x 14 inch page. The width takes a name and a description beside the amount, which is what a shop’s day actually contains, and the 8 bhan block means one book covers a long stretch of the year rather than closing every few weeks. It is offered in page counts from 31 up to 400, so a small counter can start with a slim book and move up as the entries accumulate.
Take the smaller page counts for a counter that writes a few entries a day, and the larger ones when the shop writes all day. Heavier books carry more paper, so the shipping weight rises with the size — the exact weight of each option is listed below.
Kept beside a bahi khata, the rokad answers today’s question and the khata answers who still owes what. Written daily, a single rokad shows exactly how the month went, day by day, without any regrouping or guesswork.
For a shop that also gives the customer a written copy, a nakal register pairs naturally with it: the rokad keeps the money, the nakal keeps the copy.
Sizing a single rokad is a question about the counter, not the shelf. A 101 or 125 page book suits a shop that writes a few entries a day and wants a fresh register every couple of months, while the 300 and 400 page options suit a busy counter that would otherwise be carrying balances forward every few weeks.
Whatever the size, keep the same columns from the first entry: date, particulars, receipt, payment, balance. A single rokad written that way can be totalled at a glance, and anyone helping in the shop can carry it on without being told how the book works.
